Evaluating A Digital Escape Room with the Triple E Rubric

Image
I used the Triple E Rubric to assess a digital escape room that I did with students. This escape room served as a test review for the Sophocles play Oedipus Rex. The escape room utilized Google forms. Students received several sets of clues to answer a puzzle. The answers to the clues could be found within the story or through a Google search. The form was locked in a way that students couldn't move on until they solved each clue. This assignment was self-paced and students were active participants.       I marked straight 2's in the "engagement in the learning" section. I feel like this assignment allows students to stay focused on the task due to the locked nature of the form. Students were motivated because it was a fun way to engage with the text. There was also external motivation due to the competitive nature of the assignment. Students wanted to "escape" first and beat their classmates. Students had to work to solve the clues, so they were ...

Pear Deck: A Review

Image
This week, I am looking at the app "Pear Deck." Pear Deck is a tool that turns Google Slides Presentations into interactive slides for students. A teacher can import her slides into Pear Deck, and use a variety of techniques to gather student responses. The teacher can link articles for students to read, and Pear Deck will force the website open automatically. The teacher can embed questions within the presentation. The teacher can also choose how students respond to the various questions. The teacher can use multiple choice format, short answer format, drag and drop format, and more. Pear Deck is designed to increase student engagement. Students may feel more comfortable and confident answering questions from their screen rather than in person. Pear Decks can be used for note taking, checks for understanding, formative assessments, and more.  Pros:  1. Easily compatible with Google. Teachers can import already made Google Slides presentations into Pear Deck. 2. Quick way to ...

Reflection 1: Blended Learning

Image
This semester, I am following Cult of Pedagogy. They post blogs and podcasts on various topics. This week I am looking at a September 2022 article by Catlin Tucker that discusses blended learning strategies. This post caught my attention because I am familiar with blended learning from teaching during the pandemic. The use of blended learning has carried on past Covid in many ways. Given that it is now winter, we are at risk of bad weather at any time. My school will utilize virtual learning in the case of a snow day. So, I wanted to refresh myself on some blended learning strategies.       This blog post begins by explaining how shortcomings of the whole-group instruction model were revealed when learning switched to online. When teachers lacked their normal degree of control, student education suffered. Tucker defines blended learning as “the combination of active, engaged learning online combined with active, engaged learning offline to provide...
